Transform dull, underexposed shots into crisp, vivid photographs with Auto Lighting Optimizer. This smart feature examines exposure and contrast at the time of shooting. If an image is too dark or lacks contrast, Auto Lighting Optimizer boosts brightness and contrast to produce more pleasing results. Auto Lighting Optimizer works in AE modes and when shooting with flash.   It corrects both underexposed images as well as photos shot in low-contrast environments such as mist or haze. Additionally, it incorporates a face detection function that lightens faces in backlit scenes, making it excellent for obtaining great looking portraits and group shots when shooting into the sun.

The EOS 1000D simply won’t quit. An expanded burst rate up to memory card capacity *1 means you never have to worry about missing a moment — even when shooting JPEGs at up to 3fps. Rapid response is further assured thanks to a snappy 0.1-second startup time *2 so you are always ready to shoot at a moment’s notice.   And with maximum shutter speeds of 1/4000 sec. for normal photography and 1/200 sec. for flash, action shots exhibit stunning clarity and sharpness.

*1 Based on Canon test standards using a 2GB SD memory card and shot at ISO 100, using the Standard Picture Style setting.
Capacity varies depending on subject, memory card brand, image recording setting, and other variables.
*2 Approximate. Based on CIPA testing standards.

Canon’s outstanding reputation for its autofocus systems extends to the EOS 1000D. The wide array, seven-point sensor provides excellent focus coverage both horizontally and vertically for any Canon EF lens, and features high sensitivity to maintain focus even in low-light situations.   For maximum precision, the center AF point works as a cross-type sensor — a nice touch for maintaining critical focus in important areas of your composition. The EOS 1000D gives you the option to select focus points manually or automatically using one of three different AF modes.

Give free reign to your creativity with Picture Styles. Six preset settings (Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, and Monochrome) enhance photos by adjusting sharpness, contrast, saturation, and other image properties to fit your subject or artistic vision. Three other settings accommodate custom styles or Picture Style files downloadable from Canon’s Picture Style web site.   Picture Styles can be applied to photos when taking the shot or to RAW images on a computer. For expanding your artistic horizons even further, you can customize Picture Styles by adjusting sharpness, contrast, color saturation, color tone, filter, and toning using Picture Style Editor or in-camera controls. Picture Style Editor also lets you make minute adjustments to specific colors.

When you find yourself in front of the camera, you’ll appreciate the EOS 1000D’s flexible self-timer. In addition to standard one-shot mode, you can also set the timer to take from two to ten shots continuously at 3fps.   This makes it easy to get just the right shot, especially for group photos. And when using a tripod, a two-second delay setting helps reduce camera vibration for optimum image clarity at slow shutter speeds.

You don’t have to be a professional to shoot like one with the EOS 1000D. A variety of preset and custom modes make it a breeze to choose the proper setting no matter what your subject. For point-and-shoot ease, six pre-programmed Basic Zone modes can be selected on the large Mode Dial along with one for fully automatic operation if you’re not sure which to choose.   When you’re ready to go beyond the basics, try Creative Zone modes. These include auto exposure settings for aperture or shutter priority shooting along with one for maintaining a pre-determined depth of field. And for even more creative freedom, a manual mode is available, giving you complete control over all exposure settings.

Just point and shoot. The EOS 1000D makes all settings for you, and activates the built-in flash when necessary — even when shooting strongly backlit subjects.
A simple solution for more pleasing people pictures. Backgrounds are softly blurred to create an artful separation from the main subject. You’ll also notice softer skin and hair than when using Full Auto.
Great for postcard-like landscapes. Both backgrounds and foregrounds display excellent focus with more vivid, sharper greens and blues.
Get in tight for stunningly beautiful close-ups of flowers and other small objects. Results are even more impressive with optional Canon macro lenses.
Capture fast moving events as they unfold. Kids at play, animals in the wild, or your favorite team in action. Press and hold the shutter button for continuous shooting at up to 3fps.
Balanced lighting the easy way. Both your subject and background will be beautifully exposed. A tripod is recommended due to the slow shutter speeds used in this mode.
Experience the beauty of natural light. Capture the atmosphere of the original scene by disabling flash. This is also convenient when flash photography is prohibited. When shooting in low light conditions, use a tripod for best results.
