Set your creative mind free and enter a new realm of photographic expression with the remarkable EOS 50D. Truly a camera for the ages, this capable new EOS is equipped with Canon’s recently developed 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, delivering spectacular detail and stunningly realistic images. The APS-C sensor has a convenient 1.6 conversion ratio that effectively increases the focal length of lenses for enhanced telephoto effects while allowing for a lightweight design.   And that’s not all. The super-sensitive microlens array of the sensor enables an ISO range from 100 to an astounding ISO 12800*, giving you the ability to shoot in the most challenging environments without flash or tripod. Reveal the warm, natural beauty of a cozily lit interior, or capture the decisive moment in a dynamic street scene at night. Wherever your wandering spirit leads, the EOS 50D goes with you, providing unencumbered, hand-held shooting capability.

* With ISO expansion. Normal ISO range is 100 to 3200.

Processing the vast amount of data generated by the EOS 50D calls for power and speed. Enter DIGIC 4 — Canon’s most advanced imaging processor yet. DIGIC 4 works hand-in-hand with the 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor to deliver photos of unsurpassed beauty and lifelike clarity. Featuring 14-bit analog/digital conversion, the new processor produces 16,384 colors compared to the 4,096 colors of 12-bit conversion common to other cameras in its class.   The end result is a wide dynamic range, extended tonal gradation, and a low signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, ultra-fast processing allows the EOS 50D to easily handle enhanced imaging features such as lens peripheral illumination correction, Auto Lightning Optimizer, and face-detection autofocus during Live View shooting, as well as drive the detail-rich, 3.0-inch VGA LCD monitor.

Easy shooting is just part of EOS 50D’s magic. A comprehensive set of intelligent imaging features assure that you get the most from each photo opportunity as well as provide enhanced creative control. The improved Auto Lighting Optimizer transforms lifeless, underexposed snaps into sharp, vivid photos while highlight tone priority preserves delicate highlight detail — a sure way to capture the subtle intricacies of light fabric or other textured, high-key surfaces.

Noise is almost unheard of with EOS 50D thanks to two noise reduction modes. Long exposure noise reduction produces clean, virtually noise-free images for exposures of one second or longer. High ISO speed noise reduction decreases noise when shooting at the upper end of the ISO scale, and can be applied in three different levels — Standard, Low, or Strong — or disabled.

There is also new lens peripheral Illumination correction which compensates for light falloff when shooting JPEG images. The optical characteristics of up to 40 Canon lenses can be registered in the EOS 50D via EOS Utility in order to take advantage of this new function. With bundled Digital Photo Professional software, you can also correct light falloff, distortions, chromatic aberration, and color blur of RAW images.

Canon’s renowned Picture Styles offer further control over the look of your photos. Picture Styles are an easy way to apply creative effects, either while shooting or when performing post-processing operations on a computer. Six preset settings — Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, and Monochrome — modify images to fit your artistic vision by adjusting sharpness, contrast, saturation, and other properties. Additionally, three user-defined settings allow you to store custom styles, Picture Style files downloaded from Canon’s Picture Style web site, or original styles created using bundled Picture Style Editor software.

Canon’s comprehensive dust-reduction technology, EOS Integrated Cleaning System, just got better. Combining measures for both preventing and eliminating dust, this renowned solution provides a multi-tiered approach to keeping your photos virtually spotless. The Self Cleaning Sensor Unit activates when you power on, automatically cleaning the low-pass filter where dust mainly accumulates. You can also manually activate the cleaning process whenever you detect dust on images.   For added protection, the low-pass filter now includes a fluorite coating that makes it incredibly easy to eliminate stubborn particles with a simple blower brush. Additionally, in the event dust spots appear on images, the smart Dust Delete Function in bundled Digital Photo Professional software pinpoints the location of dust on the sensor and automatically erases the corresponding spots from images.
