Large and clear, it makes viewing the scene extremely easy. Various information is also conveniently displayed. For example, ISO speed is displayed at all times, a B/W shooting indicator is displayed when appropriate, and the maximum number of exposures per burst is displayed in two digits. New Ef-series interchangeable focusing screens are optionally available.

At maximum brightness, for example, images are easy to view in highly lit outdoor settings. Uniform brightness over the entire 230,000-pixel screen and the wide 140-degree viewing angle allow clear observation from almost any angle in sunshine or shadow. Shooting information is clearly displayed and large text and menus simplify setting adjustment and selection. The LCD is also efficiently designed to consume minimum energy.

The EOS 40D is designed to provide highly reliable performance. Its rigid chassis constructed of stainless steel and magnesium alloy contributes to high durability and effective electromagnetic shielding. Robust design extends to a high-torque shutter mechanism with a high durability of 100,000 cycles, a hot shoe refined for reliable flash shooting, and an optical contactless X-sync switch for reliable Speedlite use.

Convenient Basic Zone modes automatically adjust brightness and contrast for favorable results. The EOS 40D also provides a high degree of customization. You can register up to 3 combinations of user settings (shooting functions and menu settings) for selection on the Mode Dial, and Custom Functions are now divided into 4 categories for easier access to a total of 24 functions and 62 settings.
