EOS 20D Firmware Update Version 2.0.3

Firmware specification changes

This firmware update (version 2.0.3) incorporates the following additions and improvements:

Fixes a problem in color temperature information transmission that occurred when using Speedlite 430EX.
Improves reliability in communicaion when using CF cards.

This fIrmware update applies to cameras with firmware versions up to 2.0.2 installed. If your camera's firmware is already version 2.0.3, it is not necessary to perform this update.

NOTE:
Please remove the lens from your camera before performing this update.
After completing the update, turn the camera off and remove the battery for at least two seconds.
This will cause the camera to recognize the new firmware.

What has been changed in version 2.0.3 of the firmware?

It includes the following additions/improvements:

Are the previous versions of the firmware included in version 2.0.3?

Yes, the following improvements from the previous version are included:

Version 1.1.0 changes:

Three new languages (Russian, Korean, and Traditional Chinese) have been added to the camera menus.

Three new languages have been added to the 12 current ones, for a total of 15 supported languages.

The phenomenon of horizontal line noise appearing in images taken at high ISO settings while using the internal flash has been fixed.

The issue with horizontal line noise appearing in shots taken at high ISO settings (ISO800, ISO1600, etc.) while using the internal flash has been fixed.

Version 2.0.0 changes:

Support for the wireless file transmitter WFT-E1.

This function works when the WFT-E1 firmware is 2.0.1 or later.

Version 2.0.2 changes:

Fixes a bug that prevented the EOS Capture application from operating correctly when the camera's image quality setting is RAW+JPEG. This phenomenon only occurs in the Version 2.0.0 firmware.

Q:	How do I check the camera's current firmware version number?
A:	Turn the Main Switch ON, and press the "MENU" button to display the menu. Turn the Quick Control Dial, and you will see the "Firmware Ver.X.X.X" at the end of the settings shown in yellow, which is the currently installed firmware version number. For more details, please refer to the camera's instruction manual on pages 30, 31.

Q:	How do I update the EOS 20D's firmware?
A:	These are two ways to update the camera's firmware. Download the firmware file from this web site and install the update as shown in the updating procedure. Bring the camera to a Canon Service Center and have the firmware updated by the center. If you choose the latter method, contact a Canon Service Center in your region.

Do I need any special equipment to update the EOS 20D's firmware?

The firmware update file needs to be copied to a CF card, so a card reader or a computer with a PC card slot will be required. (The firmware cannot be downloaded directly to the camera via the USB interface cable.)

When using CF cards with a card reader, however, there are cases where a PC card adapter is necessary.

Other required equipment is listed below.

(1-A) Battery Pack BP-511A or BP-514 (The battery pack must be fully charged.)
(1-B) AC Adapter Kit ACK-E2 (sold separately)
(2) CF card (16MB or more, 2GB or less)

In order to supply power to the camera, either (1-A) or (1-B) is necessary.

Q:	I do not have the equipment necessary for the firmware update.
A:	Please contact a Canon Service Center in your region.

Q:	While copying the firmware, the word "ERROR" is shown on the display.
A:	The firmware updating procedure has failed. If you used battery pack BP-511A or BP-514, please change the power supply equipment to the AC Adapter Kit ACK-E2, and try to update the firmware again. If the word "ERROR" still appears on the display after the update, or some problems are found during the update, please contact the Canon Service Center.

Preparation for EOS 20D firmware update

Format a CF card

Use a formatted CF card for installing the new firmware ( 16MB or more, 2GB or less).

Be sure to carefully review the contents of the CF card before formatting. Insert the CF card into the EOS 20D, and turn on the Main Switch. Press "MENU" button and select the tools "Setup" menu. And then select "FORMAT" and then accept the confirmation to initialize the CF card.

Prepare Power Supply and/or Interface Cable

One of the following power supplies is necessary for this firmware update.

Battery Pack BP-511A/ BP-514 (fully charged)
AC Adapter Kit ACK-E2 (sold separately)

Precautions

When performing the firmware update operations, do so after removing the lens from the camera.
Use a fully charged Battery Pack BP-511A/BP-514 or dedicated AC Adapter Kit (Optional) ACK-E2 for the firmware update.
Do not shut off the power during the firmware writing operation. A power failure during the firmware writing operation may disable the camera.
Do not open the CF card slot cover or press any camera buttons during the firmware writing operation.

EOS 20D firmware update procedures

(1) Download the firmware update file from this page

The file for updating the camera's firmware can be downloaded from the bottom of this page.

Please download the compressed, self-extracting file that matches your computer's operating system.

Windows

Double-click the downloaded "eos20d203.exe" file.

Clicking "OK" will cause the file's contents to be extracted and the firmware update file "20d00203.fir" to be created. (Click "Browse" to select a destination for the extracted files. This destination may be different from the path initially displayed, "C:\".)

The firmware update file "20d00203.fir" will take up 8.09MB (8,493,110bytes) of disk space when created.

You can confirm this by right-clicking the icon and selecting the Properties command from the pop-up menu that appears.

If the file size differs from the above, please download the file again from the Web site. Also, firmware updating service is provided free of charge at Canon Service Centers.

Copy the firmware update file "20d00203.fir" via a card reader to a CF card that has been formatted in the EOS 20D.

The drive letter (E:) may be different on your system.

Double-click the CF card icon ["Removable disk (E:)"].

Remove the CF card from the card reader after confirming that the firmware update file "20d00203.fir" has been saved to the card.

*When removing the CF card, be sure to do so as described in the documentation for the computer or the card reader.

Macintosh

The downloaded file "20d00203.fir.sit" will automatically self-extract, creating the firmware update file "20d00203.fir".

The firmware update file "20d00203.fir" will take up 8.1MB (8,493,110bytes) of disk space when created.

To check the file size, select the icon, and then select the Get Info command from the File menu.

If the file size differs from the above, please download the file again from the Web site. Also, firmware updating service is provided free of charge at Canon Service Centers.

Copy the firmware update file "20d00203.fir" via a card reader to a CF card that has been formatted in the EOS 20D.

Double-click the CF card icon ["EOS_DIGITAL"].

Remove the CF card from the card reader after confirming that the firmware update file "20d00203.fir" has been saved to the card.

*Before removing the CF card from the card reader, select the EOS_DIGITAL icon, and then choose Eject EOS_DIGITAL from the File menu (or drag the EOS_DIGITAL icon to the Trash).

Copy the firmware update file "20D00203.fir" in the computer to the CF card. Please copy the firmware update file "20d00203.fir" to the root directory of the CF card. If the firmware update file is placed in a subfolder of the CF card, the EOS 20D will not see it.

(2) Insert the CF card with the firmware into the camera and turn the Main Switch on.

Rotate the Mode Dial to select <P> mode (or one of the other modes in the creative zone).

Turn the camera ON, and then press the "MENU" button to display the menu.

(3) After selecting "Firmware Ver.x.x.x", press the "SET" button.

Rotate the Quick Control Dial to select the "Firmware Ver.x.x.x" item at the bottom of the Set-up menu (Yellow).

The firmware update screen will appear.

If the firmware update screen does not appear on the LCD monitor, the firmware update file may not have been properly copied to the CF card, so please try again starting from step (1).

Turn the Quick Control Dial, select [OK], and then press the "SET" button.

The following message will appear on LCD monitor, and the camera will check the version of its firmware. This process will take approximately six seconds.

After checking the current firmware, both the current and the new versions will be displayed on the LCD as follows.

(4) Execute the firmware update after confirming the version to be installed, by selecting [Yes] with Quick Control Dial and pressing the "SET" button.

If you select [No] and press the "SET" button, the firmware update is cancelled.

The following message will appear during the update.

The update will take approximately 2 minutes.

Do not turn the power off, open the CF card slot cover, or press any of the camera’s buttons during the update.

When the update is completed, the following message will appear on the LCD.

(5) Complete the firmware update by pressing the "SET" button.

(6) The following details appear on LCD monitor, so please turn the camera OFF.

The firmware update is now completed.

When the firmware update operations are finished, turn the camera off and remove battery from the camera for at least two seconds. This will cause the new firmware to take effect after the battery has been reloaded and the camera is turned on.

Format the CF card before using it again.

Verifying the firmware update

Turn the camera off and remove battery from the camera. Reloaded the battery and make sure the firmware version is 2.0.3. If so, the update has been completed properly. To confirm the firmware version, turn the Main Switch ON, and press the "MENU" button to display the menu. Turn the Quick Control Dial, and you will see the "Firmware Ver.X.X.X" at the end of the settings shown in yellow, which is the number of the firmware version. For more details, please refer to the instruction manual at pages 30 and 31.

Note: Select P mode (or one of the other creative modes). The version of the firmware will not appear in the basic modes.

If an ERROR message appears during the firmware update

In case the following message appears during the firmware update, please press the "SET" button and return to the beginning of the procedure. If you still have a problem, please contact the Canon Service Center in your region.

You shall not alter, modify, disassemble, decompile or otherwise reverse engineer the Software and you also shall not have any third party to do so. You shall not modify, remove or delete a copyright notice of Canon contained in the Software.

Except as expressly provided herein, no license or right, express or implied, is hereby conveyed or granted by Canon to you for any intellectual property of Canon.

2. OWNERSHIP AND COPYRIGHT: The Software is copyrighted and owned by Canon. You agree and acknowledge that Canon transfers neither ownership interest nor intellectual property in the Software to you under this Agreement or otherwise, and that Canon retains all right, title and interest to the Software.

3. EXPORT RESTRICTIONS: You agree to comply with all applicable export control laws and regulations of the country involved, and not to export or re-export, directly or indirectly, the Software in violation of any such laws and regulations.

4. SUPPORT AND UPDATE: Canon, Canon’s subsidiaries and affiliates, their distributors and dealers are not responsible for maintaining or helping you in your use of the Software. No updates, bug-fixes or support will be made available to you for the Software.

5. DISCLAIMER: THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. 7. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS NOTICE: The Software is a "commercial item," as that term is defined at 48 C.F.R. 2.101 (Oct 1995), consisting of "commercial computer software" and "commercial computer software documentation," as such terms are used in 48 C.F.R. 12.212 (Sept 1995). Consistent with 48 C.F.R. 12.212 and 48 C.F.R. 227.7202-1 through 227.72024 (June 1995), all U.S. Government End Users shall acquire the Software with only those rights set forth herein. Manufacturer is Canon Inc./30-2, Shimomaruko 3-chome, Ohta-ku, Tokyo 146-8501, Japan.

8. SEVERABILITY: In the event that any provision of this Agreement is declared or found to be illegal by any court or tribunal of competent jurisdiction, such provision shall be null and void with respect to the jurisdiction of that court or tribunal and all the remaining provisions of this Agreement shall remain in full force and effect.

9. ACKNOWLEDGMENT: BY CLICKING "I agree and download" AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE, YOU SHALL BE DEEMED TO HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT YOU HAVE READ THIS AGREEMENT, UNDERSTOOD IT, AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY ITS TERMS AND CONDITIONS.
