  1. Supports the WFT-E2 II wireless file transmitter that was released in December 2009.

Are the previous versions of firmware included in version 1.3.0?

Yes, the following improvements from the previous versions are included:

Version 1.2.5 changes:

  1. Corrects a phenomenon associated with image display during Live View shooting. Corrects a phenomenon in which a displayed image becomes pitch-black if it is zoomed in during Live View shooting.
  2. Improves reliability of USB communication. Corrects a phenomenon in which "busy" may continue to appear on the camera, if the USB cable is disconnected during USB communication.
  3. Changes the error indications that are displayed on the camera. In previous firmware, if an error is detected "Err 99" is displayed on the camera in most cases.
  4. Firmware Update Version 1.2.5 further specify the error indications as follows:

Indications on the Camera's LCD monitor (XX are numbers listed on the right.)

*1: Err 10 is only displayed on the EOS-1Ds Mark III and other error numbers are shared.

    • If malfunctions in the camera are detected, "Err XX" will be displayed. A two-digit number that corresponds to the malfunctions detected by the camera will be displayed in the "XX" section of the error number. Other than the error numbers listed above, there are other numbers such as "01". In that case, provide appropriate handling and servicing by following the details displayed on the LCD monitor of the camera.
    • If an error code appears frequently, the camera is malfunctioning; therefore, note down the error number and contact our service center.
    • The changes in the display of error indications only apply to the EOS-1D Mark III and EOS-1Ds Mark III. The above error numbers and details do not apply to models other than the specified models.

Version 1.2.3 changes:

1. Includes the following new features that were frequently requested by customers to the new firmware.

    1. Direct selection of AF points by the Multi-controller is added to C.Fn III-9.

Settings 3, 4, and 5 of C.Fn III-9 allow the user to select AF points directly with the Multi-controller instead of the Quick Control Dial or Main Dial.

    • In setting 3, you can select from all 19 points with the Multi-controller.
    • In setting 4, your selection is limited to the 9 inner points with the Multi-controller.
    • In setting 5, your selection is limited to the 9 outer points with the Multi-controller.
    1. Alternate access to Exposure compensation is added to C.Fn IV-3.

Settings 3 and 4 of C.Fn IV-3 allow the user to control Exposure compensation when using the Quick Control Dial to control AF Point Selection or ISO Speed selection.

    • In setting 3, AF point selection is controlled by the Quick Control Dial while metering is active. Additionally, the functions of the Exposure compensation/Aperture button and AF Point selection button are reversed, allowing easy access to Exposure compensation through the Quick Control Dial.
    • In setting 4, ISO speed selection is controlled by the Quick Control Dial while metering is active. Additionally, the functions of the Exposure compensation/Aperture button and ISO speed set buttons are reversed, allowing easy access to Exposure compensation it while holding the camera.
    1. With the camera's External Speedlite control menu, Flash function settings can be used to set the Wireless setting and Zoom.
    2. *This is only for EOS-1D Mark III as it is already incorporated in EOS-1Ds Mark III from the initial mass production.

For details, please see the explanations on the new features (PDF file) that can be download from the bottom of this page.

2. Improves the stability of AF accuracy in AI servo AF when shooting extremely low-contrast subjects.

Improves the stability of AF accuracy in AI servo AF when shooting extremely low-contrast subjects continuously.

Version 1.1.3 changes:

1. Increases transmission speed when using high-speed SD cards.

Through the efforts to accelerate transmission, the speed of writing images to or reading images from high-speed SD cards is made faster.

*Depending on the SD cards you use, there may be no difference.

2. Fixes a phenomenon involving not being able to release the shutter.

Depending on the timing at which the AF-ON button and shutter release button are pressed, in rare cases the shutter could not be released; but this phenomenon has been fixed.

3. Improves AF tracking in specific conditions.

a) Improves AF tracking when shooting outdoors in bright environments.
b) Improves AF tracking of low-contrast subjects.

4. Corrects errors in the Spanish and Korean menu screens.

There were errors in the Spanish wording of some of the C.Fn items and in the wording of messages that appear in Korean during firmware updates, but those have been corrected.

*The errors described above that appear in Korean during firmware updates will be corrected after this update is completed.

Version 1.1.0 changes:

1. Improves the look of images when played back on the LCD monitor.

Applies a slightly stronger sharpness setting to the LCD monitor when images are played back.

2. Countermeasures for Main Dial response errors (Main, Quick Control, Vertical-grip Main).

Fixes a rare response error in the Main Dials in which they either did not respond when rotated or would change several clicks' worth even if only clicked once.

3. Reduces the tendency to autofocus on the background instead of the main subject when shooting in AI Servo AF under certain conditions.

Reduces the tendency of the camera to autofocus on high-contrast backgrounds when shooting in conditions where AF detection is difficult, such as when the main subject is not completely covered by the AF frames or if the main subject's contrast is low.

4. Corrects errors in the Italian and Simplified Chinese menu screens.

5. Fixes a rare phenomenon in which the camera cannot start normally when the battery is inserted.

Fixes a rare phenomenon in which the camera cannot start normally when the battery is inserted, such as after replacing the battery. This phenomenon sometimes occurred with the version 1.0.9 firmware when the battery was inserted into the camera due to the camera's communication timing. The occurrences were extremely rare, and abnormal operation could be fixed by reloading the battery.
The version 1.1.0 firmware incorporates countermeasures for this phenomenon.

How do I check the version of the camera's current firmware?

Press the MENU button and turn the Main Dial to select Set-up 3 menu (yellow). The current firmware version will be displayed in the Firmware section of that menu.

How do I update the EOS-1D Mark III firmware?

The methods of firmware updating are provided below :

  • Download the firmware file from this web site and conduct the updating as shown in the updating procedure.
  • Bring the camera to a Canon Service Center and have the firmware updated there. If you choose this method, contact a Canon Support Center in your region.

Do I need any special equipment to update the EOS-1D Mark III firmware?

This equipment required is as follows.

1) Battery Pack LP-E4 (the battery pack must be fully charged) or AC Adapter Kit ACK-E4 (optional)
2) CF card or SD card (64MB or more, 64GB or less)

What if I do not have the equipment necessary for updating the firmware?

Please contact a Canon Support Center in your region.

How can I download the EOS-1D Mark III firmware?

The file for updating the firmware can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
Select the compressed, self-extracting file appropriate for your operating system and double-click to extract.

After completing the download and extraction, confirm that the following files have been generated :

Firmware update file

1D300130.FIR (10,247,372 bytes)

* Windows: Properties Size
* Mac OS: Get Info, -> General Information Size

If the file size differs from the above, please download the file again from the web site. Also, firmware updating service is provided free of charge at Canon Service Centers.

How do I update the firmware?

This firmware can be updated by copying the downloaded file to an initialized (formatted) CF card (SD card) by the EOS-1D Mark III, and then loading the card in the camera. Please refer to the PDF file at the end of this page for more details.

Please note the following when updating:

  • Do not turn off the main switch of the camera during the firmware updating process. When using household AC power supply, be careful of power failure as it will interrupt this process.
  • Do not open the memory card slot cover or press any button, dial, or switch. If the camera's power supply is interrupted during firmware updating, the firmware may not load properly and the camera may require service before it can be used again.
