file
A collection of digital data stored under a single name. A digital photo is an image file. The amount of the digital data is called the file size.
fill flash
Outdoor portraits with the sun behind the subject or with a bright background can cause the face to look dark. In such cases, set the exposure for the background and use flash for the face. The background and the face will then look properly exposed. This technique is called fill flash.

film camera
Cameras which use film.
Fine/Normal
Other than the image resolution, the photo's image quality (Fine or Normal) can also be set with the digital SLR camera. The Fine setting yields better image quality.

flare
The light entering directly into the camera lens is reflected internally causing a whitish color cast over the image. This can be alleviated to some degree with a lens hood or hand blocking out the direct light source.
ghosting

flash
Artificial illumination lasting for only an instant. It is close to daylight type of light. Since the flash is a very bright light fired for a very short moment, it can freeze a moving subject like with a fast shutter speed. Also called strobe or Speedlite.

focal length
Expressed in millimeters (mm), this refers to how much of the scene can be captured by the lens. It is the distance between the lens' theoretical center to the imaging sensor. If the focal length is longer than 50 mm, it is a telephoto lens. If it is shorter, it is a wide-angle lens. In the case of digital SLR cameras with sensors smaller than full frame, the lens focal length equivalent to the 35mm format, or crop factor, is often stated.

focus
This is where the photo looks the sharpest. Technically, focus is achieved at only one point (plane) and other objects may appear to be in focus within the depth of field.

format
Formatting the memory card enables the card to be used to store data. When the card is formatted, any previous data contained will be lost. Also called initialization.
framing
This is the act of composing the shot while looking through the viewfinder. Since the framing of the subject greatly affects the photo, it is an important part of shooting.

front light/back light
This refers to where the subject's light source is located. If it is in front of the subject, it is front light. And if it is behind the subject, it is called backlight.
