How to check the firmware version of affected units

If the version of the firmware on your camcorder (HF M30/M31/M36/M300/M306) is [1.0.0.0]/[1.0.1.0] or [1.0.0.2]/[1.0.1.2], this update applies.

  1. Turn the camcorder on.
  2. Playback ModePress the Camera/Play button Camera/Play button and set the camcorder to playback mode.
  3. Touch the icons on the camcorder's LCD screen in the following order.
    [HF M30/M31/M36]
     
    Index mode > SD > Photos > MENU > Setup
    [HF M300/M306]
     
    Index mode > Photos > MENU > Setup

  4. Drag the screen down to the last row under Setup, and then check the number displayed for the Firmware.

  5. Touch the X icon on the camcorder's LCD screen, close the [MENU] screen, and turn the camcorder off.

* This firmware update is only for HF M30/M31/M36/M300/M306. In the unlikely event that an error occurs during the firmware update, there is a risk that the camcorder may no longer start. Please perform the firmware update only after carefully reading the Firmware Update Procedures which can be download in PDF form from the Canon download page. After performing the update, the previous version of the firmware cannot be restored.

Q: What kind of card is an SDXC memory card?

A:

SDXC memory cards are a large-capacity memory cards that exceed 32 GB.SDXC
These memory cards have a different file system from the one used in current SDHC memory cards (FAT), and support a different version of the physical specification, and can record a large volume of data. For more details, please see the web site of the SDXC memory card manufacturer.

Q: What kind of SDXC memory cards can be used?

A:

SDXC memory cards of SD Speed Class 4/6/10 can be used.

* The operations of Canon camcorders have been confirmed with SDXC memory cards manufactured by Panasonic and Toshiba (as of May 2010).

Q: Can the movies and photos recorded on an SDXC memory card be played back on a computer?

A:

  1. Please be aware that if you use an SDXC memory card that is not supported by the operating system of your computer, a message that prompts you to initialize the card will appear.
    For details, please contact the manufacturer of the operating system or the memory card.
    Note that the compatibility information of the operating systems is as follows. (As of May 2010)

  3. Data recorded to an SDXC memory card cannot be used to create DVDs with the DW-100 DVD writer (sold separately). To create DVDs with the DW-100, record the data to either the camcorder's internal memory or an SDHC memory card.

Q: How can I update the firmware on my camcorder?

There are two methods for updating the firmware.

  1. You can download the firmware update and the Firmware Update Procedures (PDF) from our Web site and update the firmware by following the procedures.
  2. You can bring your camcorder to local Canon service centers to have Canon update the firmware for you.

Q: What kind of equipment is required to update the firmware?

A:

To update the firmware of this camcorder, the following items are required.

1. Camcorder HF M30/M31/M36/M300/M306
2. Computer OS: Computer with either Windows* or Mac OS X*
3. SD memory card reader SD memory card reader (commercially available) or a computer with an SD card slot

First download the new firmware from the Canon download page, and then copy it to an SD Memory Card (or SDHC Memory Card) using your computer. Next insert the SD Memory Card (or SDHC Memory Card) with the firmware on it into the camcorder, and then operate the camcorder according to the procedures to perform the firmware update.

End User License Agreement:

(3) You shall not alter, modify, disassemble, decompile or otherwise reverse engineer the Software and you also shall not have any third party to do so. You shall not modify, remove or delete a copyright notice of Canon contained in the Software.
(4) Except as expressly provided herein, no license or right, express or implied, is hereby conveyed or granted by Canon to you for any intellectual property of Canon.

2. OWNERSHIP AND COPYRIGHT:

The Software is copyrighted and owned by Canon. You agree and acknowledge that Canon transfers neither ownership interest nor intellectual property in the Software to you under this Agreement or otherwise, and that Canon retains all right, title and interest to the Software.

3. EXPORT RESTRICTIONS:

You agree to comply with all applicable export control laws and regulations of the country involved, and not to export or re-export, directly or indirectly, the Software in violation of any such laws and regulations.

4. SUPPORT AND UPDATE:

Canon, Canon's subsidiaries and affiliates, their distributors and dealers are not responsible for maintaining or helping you in your use of the Software. No updates, bug-fixes or support will be made available to you for the Software.

5. DISCLAIMER:

(1) This Agreement is effective upon your clicking "I agree" at the bottom of this page, and the Agreement remains in effect until terminated by either condition (2) or (3) as described below.
(2) You may terminate this Agreement by deleting the Software.
(3) This Agreement will also terminate if you fail to comply with any of the terms of this Agreement.
(4) If you terminate the agreement as described in (3) above, all the software installed on the product must be deleted immediately.
(5) Regardless of any of the provisions in this agreement, the stipulations in Section 2 and in Sections 4 through Section 6 remain in effect even after the termination of this agreement.

7. SEVERABILITY

In the event that any provision of this Agreement is declared or found to be illegal by any court or tribunal of competent jurisdiction, such provision shall be null and void with respect to the jurisdiction of that court or tribunal and all the remaining provisions of this Agreement shall remain in full force and effect.

8. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS NOTICE:

The Software is a "commercial item," as that term is defined at 48 C.F.R. 2.101 (Oct 1995), consisting of "commercial computer software" and "commercial computer software documentation," as such terms are used in 48 C.F.R. 12.212 (Sept 1995). Consistent with 48 C.F.R. 12.212 and 48 C.F.R. 227.7202-1 through 227.72024 (June 1995), all U.S. Government End Users shall acquire the Software with only those rights set forth herein. Manufacturer is Canon Inc./30-2, Shimomaruko 3-chome, Ohta-ku, Tokyo 146-8501, Japan.
The use of the expression "the Software" in this section means the Software covered by this Agreement.

9. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS:

BY CLICKING "I agree" AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE, YOU SHALL BE DEEMED TO HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT YOU HAVE READ THIS AGREEMENT, UNDERSTOOD IT, AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY ITS TERMS AND CONDITIONS. YOU FURTHER AGREE THAT THIS AGREEMENT IS THE COMPLETE AND EXCLUSIVE STATEMENT OF AGREEMENT BETWEEN YOU AND CANON CONCERNING THE SUBJECT MATTER HEREOF WHICH SUPERSEDES ANY PROPOSALS OR PRIOR AGREEMENT, ORAL OR WRITTEN, AND ANY OTHER COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THE PARTIES RELATING TO THE SUBJECT MATTER OF THIS AGREEMENT. NO AMENDMENT TO THIS AGREEMENT SHALL BE EFFECTIVE UNLESS SIGNED BY A DULY AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE OF CANON.
