Q:	What's new?

	A:	The internal charging function for BP-511 Battery Packs that have become over-discharged is improved.

Q:	What happens if Battery Pack BP-511 is over-discharged? Please explain the details of this battery condition.

	A:	If the voltage of BP-511 drops rapidly to a certain level, the protection circuit automatically stops the terminal output voltage to prevent any further drop in voltage. That is the "over-discharged" condition. It happens if you store the BP-511 in the camera or leave it without use for a long period of time even if it is not stored in the camera.

Q:	Explain the improvements of the charging function in detail.

	A:	With Firmware Version 1.0.0.2 or before, BP-511 Battery Packs that had become over-discharged were sometimes not chargeable in the camera. With Version 1.0.0.3, such Battery Packs can be charged in the camera.

Q:	As recommended in the Camera User Guide, I usually take out the Battery Pack BP-511 from the camera when I do not use it. Do I need to update the firmware to Version 1.0.0.3?

	A:	Yes. We recommend you to update the firmware to Version 1.0.0.3, because Battery Pack BP-511 may be over-discharged sometimes even if it is not stored in the camera and left for a long time without being used.

Q:	Can I charge an over-discharged Battery Pack BP-511 with Charge Adapter/Car Battery Cable Kit CR-560 (optional accessory)?

	A:	Yes.

I could not charge Battery Pack BP-511 in the camera with either Firmware Update Version 1.0.0.3 nor with Charge Adapter/ Car Battery Cable Kit CR-560 (Optional accessory)

Your Battery Pack BP-511 may be defective or its life has ended.

Q:	Does Firmware (update Version 1.0.0.3) replace the previous PowerShot G1 firmware update (versions 1.0.0.1 and 1.0.0.2)?

	A:	Yes. It includes the improvements of the previous firmware updates. Details of the improvements with Versions 1.0.0.1 and 1.0.0.2 are explained below.

Is PowerShot G1 Firmware Update Version 1.0.0.3 recommended for all PowerShot G1 users?

The necessity of updating can be checked by the following procedures.

Write the Serial Number of your camera in the box on the bottom of this Home Page, and then click "submit" button. If your camera needs updating, a downloading screen for the Firmware Update Procedures and Data for Firmware Update will appear. However, if "2" is printed (red) on the inside of the battery cover, the camera does not need updating, because Firmware Update Version 1.0.0.3 has been installed already.

Q:	Can I change the specification of PowerShot G1 into that of the PowerShot G2 if I use the Data of G2 Firmware Update on the G1?

	A:	It is impossible. Since the hardware specifications of the PowerShot G1 and G2 are different, you cannot change them. If you try to update the G1 with G2 firmware, the camera will not be damaged but the Firmware Update menu will not appear.

How do I update the PowerShot G1's firmware?

Two methods of firmware updating are provided for you: One is to load it by yourself directly from this web page, as described in the PowerShot G1 Firmware Installation Procedure. Another is to have the new firmware installed by the Canon Service Center in your country or region, or the local Canon Distributor mentioned in the Canon European Warranty System List (EWS).

Q:	Do I need any special equipment to install the PowerShot G1 firmware update?

	A:	In addition to the PowerShot G1 itself, you will need the following equipment: Compact Power Adapter CA-560. (Do not attempt to update the firmware without AC power.) CF card with 2MB or greater total capacity. (The 16MB CF card supplied with the PowerShot G1 is an excellent choice for this purpose.)

What happens if I fail to update the firmware properly?

The camera will not work, and at that point it will need to be repaired by the Canon Customer Support Center or the local Canon Distributor mentioned in the Canon European Warranty System List (EWS). Please read, understand and observe all precautions and instructions before attempting to update the PowerShot G1's firmware. If you are not confident that you can install the firmware update by yourself, then by all means please ask :

How can I verify the version number of the firmware that is currently installed on my PowerShot G1?

You'll need to connect your PowerShot G1 to a compatible personal computer (as listed in the PowerShot G1 Software Starter Guide) in which at least one of the following programs has been properly installed:

Canon Digital Camera TWAIN driver version 3.4 or higher (for Windows®), together with a TWAIN-compliant image editor such as Adobe® Photoshop® LE (supplied with the PowerShot G1).
ZoomBrowser EX 2.4 or higher (for Windows®)
Canon Digital Camera Photoshop® plug-in module version 3.4 or higher (for Mac OS), together with a compatible image editor such as Adobe® Photoshop® LE (supplied with the PowerShot G1).
ImageBrowser 1.4 or higher (for Mac OS)

Each of these programs has a 'Camera Settings' window that displays the version number of the connected camera's firmware. Please refer to the PowerShot G1 Software Starter Guide for instructions on installing these programs and locating the 'Camera Settings' information.

This firmware update (Version 1.0.0.3) affects the following symptoms

Firmware update Version 1.0.0.3 replaces previous Firmware update Versions and provides the following user benefit:

Improves the internal charging function for BP-511 Battery Packs that have become over-discharged.

In addition, it includes the same user benefits as those from the previous PowerShot G1 Firmware Update Versions 1.0.0.2 and 1.0.0.1.

Improvement of Ver. 1.0.0.2

Eliminates the occasional occurrence of unusual brightness or darkness in the LCD panel display when the shutter button is pressed halfway in the Tv mode.

Improvements of Ver. 1.0.0.1

		Solution for resetting the date at the end of the month.
		Correction of an underexposure problem that occurred in low light conditions when an EX-series Speedlite（220EX/ 380EX/ 420EX/ 550EX）was mounted on the camera but turned off.
		Speedlites 160E/ 200E will now flash when mounted on the PowerShot G1. But, as they are not EX-series Speedlites, they will fire at full strength. (Automatic flash exposure with the PowerShot G1 is only possible using the built-in flash or an EX-series Speedlite.)
		Correction of problem in which initial shutter "click" sound would occasionally not emit upon exposure first time after turning the power on.

Equipment required for firmware update

You will need a properly formatted CompactFlash^TM (CF) card of 2MB or greater capacity for the firmware update. (The 16MB CF card supplied with your PowerShot G1 is an excellent choice for this purpose.)

Use the dedicated AC power supply Compact Power Adapter CA-560 (includeded in the camera set) during the firmware update. (Do not attempt to load the firmware update without following this step.)

Precautions

Use the dedicated AC power supply Compact Power Adapter CA-560 for firmware update.
Do not shut off the power during the firmware writing operation. A power failure during the firmware writing operation will disable the camera.
Do not open the CF card slot cover or press any camera buttons during the firmware writing operation.
Please read, understand and observe all precautions and instructions before attempting to update the PowerShot G1's firmware. If you are not confident that you can install the firmware update by yourself, then by all means allow the Canon Customer Support Center or the local Canon Distributor listed in the Canon European Warranty System List (EWS) to assist you.

Preparation for PowerShot G1 firmware update

STEP 1 : Download the Firmware Update Procedure file from this page

You can download the Firmware Update Procedure file (PDF file) from download page.

To view PDF files Adobe® Acrobat® Reader^TM should be installed in your computer. Please get and install it before firmware update.

STEP 2 : Download the firmware from this page

In order to download firmware from Canon's web site, you will need the serial number that is written on the bottom of your PowerShot G1 camera. Please check the number carefully before entering it on the download page.

Download the firmware update file that is suited to your computer's operating system. The file is a self-extracting compressed archive. Double-click it for extraction.

After downloading and decompressing the file, verify that the "G1_FirmUpdate1003" folder contains the following file/ folder.

For Windows® : "G1_FirmUpdate1003"	For Macintosh : "G1_FirmUpdate1003"

Windows® users may need to adjust their folder view setting to "see hidden files" in order to see all the files.

The files contained in the "DC97" folder are listed in the 'Firmware Update Procedure file (PDF file)'.

STEP 3 : Preparing the CF card

Check that the CF card does not contain any important files or images; all files will be deleted from the card at the start of this procedure.

Insert the CF card into the PowerShot G1, and switch the Main Dial to (Replay) mode.

Press "MENU" button and select the tools "Setup" menu. And then select "Format" and then accept the confirmation to initialize the CF card.

PowerShot G1 firmware update procedures

PROCEDURE 1 : Copy the "DC97" folder to the CF card

Two methods are provided for copying the "DC97" folder to the CF card.

Method
(A) :

IF YOU HAVE A CF CARD READER, PC CARD READER* OR NOTEBOOK TYPE PC* WITH A PC CARD SLOT

Insert the formatted CF card into the card reader.
Copy the "DC97" folder from the downloaded data to the CF card.

* If you use a PC card reader or a notebook type PC with a PC card slot, a CF-to-PC card adapter is required.

Method
(B) :

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY OF THE ABOVE CARD READING DEVICES

Insert the CF card into the PowerShot G1, and connect it to the PC* with an USB cable or a serial cable**.
Double-click the "UploadFirmware" in the "G1_FirmUpdate1003" folder, and follow the instructions so that the "DC97" folder can be copied onto the CF card in the PowerShot G1***.

Including Windows® XP USB connection with the latest version of driver software.

Serial Interface Cable IFC-200PCS (optional) for IBM PC/AT compatible computer, or Serial Interface Cable IFC-200MC (optional) for Macintosh is required for serial connection.
PC Connector Kit (optional) may be required in some locations.

***

The Main Dial of the PowerShot G1 should be set to (PC) mode while the PC is connected.

When you attempt to transfer the data to the CF card in the PowerShot G1 with the "UploadFirmware", do not open the CF card slot cover, turn the Main Dial or turn the power off until the data transfer is completed.

Any of the above operations during data transfer will disable the firmware update.

PROCEDURE 2 : Start the camera with Replay mode

1. Ensure the camera is powered from the AC power supply.

2. Insert the CF card in the camera.

3. Then switch the Main Dial to (Replay)

PROCEDURE 3 : Select "Firm Update" from the menu

1. Press the "MENU" button to display the Play menu.

2. Select "Firm Update" from the menu.

If the "Firm Update" option is not available from the menu, then the "DC97" folder was not copied correctly to the CF card. If this is the case then return to Step 1.

PROCEDURE 4 : Press the "SET" button, and select "OK"

1. Press the "SET" button.

2. And select "OK".

Note:

Some PowerShot G1 cameras have already been updated to firmware version 1.0.0.3 prior to shipment. If you cannot see the menu shown in step 4, it means that firmware version 1.0.0.3 is already installed in your camera.

Please verify the following before downloading the archived firmware file.

Please see the inner side of the battery cover.
If you can see a red stamp "2" there, firmware version 1.0.0.3 has already been installed in your camera.

PROCEDURE 5 : Press the "SET" button

Press the "SET" button to start writing the firmware update.

Precautions :

If you wait more than 5 minutes between Procedures 4 and 5, the camera will cancel the menu and turn off using its Auto Power Off function when you press the MENU button.
In this case the firmware is not updated. To update the firmware please return to Procedure 2.

Once the update starts, the indicator LED will cycle from ORANGE to GREEN.

The message shown here will be displayed on the LCD monitor until the firmware update is complete.

The update will take approximately 90 seconds.

Do not turn the power off during the firmware writing operation.
Do not open the CF card slot cover or press any camera buttons during the firmware writing operation.

The indicator lamp goes off and the camera restarts automatically in Replay mode. This completes firmware update.

You can select [Firm Update] from Play menu after updating. Once you were successed the firmware update you can not do again.

The message shown the right will be displayed on the LCD monitor.

If you wish to use the CF card for taking pictures, initialize the card using the procedure outlined in Step 3.

If you hear constant beeping

If you hear constant beeping from the camera while updating the firmware, there is a possibility that the firmware updating procedure has failed.

Please disconnect the plug of Compact Power Adapter from household outlet to stop the beep. And then remove the Battery Pack from the camera if it is mounted.
