With DIGITAL IXUS Firmware Update 1.0.0.1, it is no longer necessary to reset the date at the end of the month.

Q: How do I update the DIGITAL IXUS's firmware?
A:

Two methods of firmware upgrading are provided for you: One is to load it by yourself directly from this web page, as described in the DIGITAL IXUS Firmware Installation procedure. Another is to have the new firmware installed by your local Canon Distributor listed in the Canon European Warranty System List (EWS).

Q:

Do I need any special equipment to install the DIGITAL IXUS firmware update?
A:

In addition to the DIGITAL IXUS itself, you will need the following equipment:

Fully charged battery pack NB-1L or AC Adapter Kit ACK300.

CF card with 2MB or greater total capacity. (The 8MB CF card supplied with the DIGITAL IXUS is an excellent choice for this purpose.)

Q: What happens if I fail to update the firmware properly?
A:

The camera will not work, and at that point it will need to be repaired by your local Canon Distributor listed in the Canon European Warranty System List (EWS). Please read, understand and observe all precautions and instructions before attempting to update the DIGITAL IXUS's firmware. If you are not confident that you can install the firmware update by yourself, then by all means please ask :

How can I verify the version number of the firmware that's currently installed on my DIGITAL IXUS?
A:

You'll need to connect your DIGITAL IXUS to a compatible personal computer (as listed in the DIGITAL IXUS Software Starter Guide) with an USB cable. At least one of the following programs has been properly installed in your computer:

  • Canon Digital Camera TWAIN driver version 3.2 or higher (for Windows 98/ Me/ 2000, USB connection), together with a TWAIN-compliant image editor such as Adobe PhotoDeluxe (supplied with the IXUS).
  • ZoomBrowser EX 2.2 or higher (for Windows 98/ Me/ 2000, USB connection)
  • Canon Digital Camera Photoshop plug-in module version 3.2 or higher (for Mac OS 8.1 or higher, USB connection), together with a compatible image editor such as Adobe PhotoDeluxe (supplied with the IXUS).
  • ImageBrowser 1.2 or higher (for Mac OS 8.1 or higher, USB connection)

Each of these programs has a ‘Camera Settings' window that displays the version number of the connected camera's firmware. Please refer to the DIGITAL IXUS Software Starter Guide for instructions on installing these programs and locating the ‘Camera Settings' information.

This firmware update (Version 1.0.0.1) affects the following symptom.


Before downloading, check if the symptoms appear.
  • With DIGITAL IXUS Firmware Update 1.0.0.1, it is no longer necessary to reset the date at the end of the month.


Equipment required for firmware update


You will need a properly formatted CompactFlashTM (CF) card of 2MB or greater capacity for the firmware update. (The 8MB CF card supplied with your DIGITAL IXUS is an excellent choice for this purpose.)

Use fully charged battery pack NB-1L or AC Adapter Kit ACK300 (optional) during the firmware update.

Precautions


  • Use fully charged battery pack NB-1L or AC Adapter Kit ACK300 for firmware update.
  • Do not shut off the power during the firmware writing operation. A power failure during the firmware writing operation will disable the camera.
  • Do not open the CF card slot cover or press any camera buttons during the firmware writing operation.
  • Please read, understand and observe all precautions and instructions before attempting to update the DIGITAL IXUS's firmware. If you are not confident that you can install the firmware update by yourself, then by all means allow local Canon Distributor mentioned in the Canon European Warranty System List (EWS) to assist you.


Preparation for DIGITAL IXUS firmware update





STEP1 : Download the firmware from this page

In order to download firmware from Canon's web site, you will need the serial number that is written on the bottom of your DIGITAL IXUS camera. Please check the number carefully before entering it on the download page.

Download the firmware update file that is suited to your computer's operating system. The file is a self-extracting compressed archive. Double-click it for extraction.

After downloading and decompressing the file, verify that the "IXUS_FirmUpdate1001" folder contains the following file/ folder.

For Windows : "IXUS_FirmUpdate1001" For Macintosh: "IXUS_FirmUpdate1001"

Windows users may need to adjust their folder view setting to "see hidden files" in order to see all the files.

The files that contained in the "DC97" folder are listed in the "readme.txt".

STEP 2 : Preparing the CF card

Check that the CF card does not contain any important files or images; all files will be deleted from the card at the start of this procedure.

Insert the CF card in to the DIGITAL IXUS, and start the camera with (Shooting) mode. Press "MENU" button until the menu will be displayed. Select "FORMAT" and then accept the confirmation to initialize the CF card.


< color="white">DIGITAL IXUS firmware update procedures


PROCEDURE 1 :

Copy the "DC97" folder from the downloaded firmware to the CF card.

Two methods are provided for copying the "DC97" folder to the CF card.


Method A : IF YOU HAVE A CF CARD READER, PC CARD READER* OR NOTEBOOK TYPE PC* WITH A PC CARD SLOT
  • Insert the formatted CF card into the card reader.
  • Copy the "DC97" folder from your computer to the CF card.

* If you use a PC card reader or a notebook type PC with a PC card slot, a CF-to-PC card adapter is required.


Method B : IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY OF THE ABOVE CARD READING DEVICES
  • Insert the CF card into the DIGITAL IXUS, and connect it to the PC* with an USB cable**.
  • Double-click the "UploadFirmware" in the "IXUS_FirmUpdate1001" folder, and follow the instructions so that the "DC97" folder can be copied onto the CF card in the DIGITAL IXUS***.

* See the DIGITAL IXUS Software Starter Guide for information on compatible personal computers.

** PC Connector Kit (optional) may be required in some locations.

*** Notes:

  • The power of DIGITAL IXUS should be ON while the PC is connected.
  • When you attempt to transfer the data to the CF card in the DIGITAL IXUS with the "UploadFirmware", do not open the CF card slot cover, and do not turn the camera off until the data transfer is completed.
  • Any of the above operations during data transfer will disable the firmware update.


PROCEDURE 2 :

Ensure the camera is powered from fully charged battery pack or the AC power supply.

Insert the CF card to the camera.

Then slide the mode switch to (Replay).

And then press the main switch to turn the camera on.

Note :
Do not turn the camera on with (Shooting) mode because the camera turns off automatically after firmware update.


PROCEDURE 3 :

Press the "MENU" button until the Play menu is displayed.

Press [ < ] (left) or [ > ] (right) button to select "Firm Update" from the menu.

Note:


If the "Firm Update" option is not available from the menu, then the "DC97" folder was not copied correctly to the CF card. If this is the case then return to Step 1.

PROCEDURE 4 :

Press the "SET" button, and then [ < ] (left) or [ > ] (right) button to select "OK"

Note :


Some DIGITAL IXUS cameras have already been updated to firmware version 1.0.0.1 prior to shipment.

Please verify following before downloading the archived firmware file.

  • Please see inner side of battery cover.
    If you can see a red stamp "0" there, firmware version 1.0.0.1 has already been installed in your camera.


    • PROCEDURE 5 :

    		Press the "SET" button to start writing the firmware update.

    		* Before procedure 5 with leaving more than 5 minutes at procedure 4, if you press the MENU button the camera will cancel the menu and turn off by its Auto Power Off function.
    In this case the firmware is not updated. To update the firmware please return to procedure 2.

    Once the update starts, the indicator LED will cycle from RED to flashing GREEN.

    The screen like right figure is displaying on LCD monitor until the update is complete.

    The update will take approximately 1 minute.

    Do not turn the power off during the firmware writing operation.
    Do not open the CF card slot cover or press any camera buttons during the firmware writing operation.

    The indicator lamp goes off and the camera turns off automatically.
    This completes firmware update.


    Verifying the firmware update (with an USB cable)


    Please connect your DIGITAL IXUS to a compatible personal computer (as listed in the DIGITAL IXUS Software Starter Guide) with an USB cable. At least one of the following programs has been properly installed in your computer:
    • Canon Digital Camera TWAIN driver version 3.2 or higher (for Windows 98/ Me/ 2000, USB connection), together with a TWAIN-compliant image editor such as Adobe PhotoDeluxe (supplied with the IXUS).
    • ZoomBrowser EX 2.2 or higher (for Windows 98/ Me/ 2000, USB connection)
    • Canon Digital Camera Photoshop plug-in module version 3.2 or higher (for Mac OS 8.1 or higher, USB connection), together with a compatible image editor such as Adobe PhotoDeluxe (supplied with the IXUS).
    • ImageBrowser 1.2 or higher (for Mac OS 8.1 or higher, USB connection)
    Each of these programs has a "Camera Settings" window that displays the version number of the connected camera's firmware. Please refer to the DIGITAL IXUS Software Starter Guide for instructions on installing these programs and locating the "Camera Settings" information.
    • If the DIGITAL IXUS Firmware Update has been installed correctly, the version number in the "Camera Settings" window will be 1.0.0.1.
    • If the firmware update was successful, you will not be able to reselect the "Firm Update" option from the Play menu.
    • If you wish to use the CF card for taking pictures, initialize the card using the procedure outlined in Step 1.


    If the camera beeps for 5 seconds while the firmware is updating


    If the camera beeps for 5 seconds while updating the firmware, there is a possibility that the firmware updating procedure has failed.

    CANON, CANON'S SUBSIDIARIES, THEIR DISTRIBUTORS AND/OR DEALERS ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING OR HELPING YOU TO USE THE SOFTWARE. NO UPDATES, FIXES OR SUPPORTS WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR THE SOFTWARE.

    5. LIMITED WARRANTY AND DISCLAIMER OF INDEMNITY

    6. TERM
    The license granted hereunder is effective upon your acceptance hereof by clicking "submit" bellow and remains in effect until terminated. You may terminate the license by destroying the Software and all copies thereof. The license granted hereunder will also terminate if you fail to comply with any term hereof. Upon termination of the license, in addition to Canon enforcing its respective legal rights, you must then promptly destroy the Software and any copy thereof.

    7. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS NOTICE
    The Software is a "commercial item," as that term is defined at 48 C.F.R. 2.101 (Oct 1995), consisting of "commercial computer software" and "commercial computer software documentation," as such terms are used in 48 C.F.R. 12.212 (Sept 1995). Consistent with 48 C.F.R. 12.212 and 48 C.F.R. 227.7202-1 through 227.72024 (June 1995), all U.S. Government End Users shall acquire the Software with only those rights set forth herein.

    8. SEVERABILITY
    In the event that any provision hereof is declared or found to be illegal by any court or tribunal of competent jurisdiction, such provision shall be null and void with respect to the jurisdiction of that court or tribunal and all the remaining provisions hereof shall remain in full force and effect.
