PowerShot G2 Firmware Version 1.1.0.0 Update Q & A

The following document answers some of the most frequently asked questions on this topic.

Q: How can I verify the version number of the firmware that is currently installed on my PowerShot G2?

A: You'll need to connect your PowerShot G2 to a compatible personal computer (as listed in the PowerShot G2 Software Starter Guide) in which at least one of the following programs has been properly installed:
  • ZoomBrowser EX 2.8 or higher (for Windows®)
  • ImageBrowser 1.8 or higher (for Mac OS)
  • RemoteCapture 2.0 or higher (for Windows® or Mac OS)
  • Canon Digital Camera TWAIN driver version 3.8 or higher (for Windows®)
  • Canon Digital Camera Photoshop® plug-in module version 3.8  or higherÅ@(for Mac OS)

Each of these programs has a 'Camera Settings' window that displays the version number of the connected camera's firmware. Please refer to the PowerShot G2 Software Starter Guide for instructions on installing these programs and locating the 'Camera Settings' information.

Q: What does "Supports Direct Print Function for CP-100/200/300 Photo Printer " mean?

A: The Direct Print function refers to printing an image by connecting a compatible camera and printer directly with  an I/F cable. Please see the "Connecting to a Direct Print Function Compatible Printer" section in your camera user guide for operating instructions.

Q: What does "Direct Print Function for Direct Print Compatible BJ printers" mean?

A: The BJ Direct Print function refers to printing an image by connecting a compatible camera and BJ printer directly with an I/F cable. Please see your printer manual to verify if it supports this function. Also, please see the "Connecting to a Direct Print Function Compatible Printer" section in your camera user guide for operating instructions.

Q: What is "Exif 2.2"?

A: Exif 2.2 is a standard set up by the JEITA with the aim of strengthening the connection between digital cameras and printers to achieve high-quality output with easy operation.
Information on shooting conditions for digital still cameras ("DSC") has been added to the existing Exif standard resulting in the newly released Exif 2.2 standard. A printer that supports Exif 2.2 is therefore able to make use of this information to provide optimized high-quality output. "Exif Print" will be the name used to identify products supporting the Exif 2.2 standard.

Q: What does "Supports ON/OFF selection of the power-saving mode while connected to a computer" mean?

A: In order to prevent draining the battery, the DIGITAL IXUS 300/v and PowerShot S300/S110  is specified to switch to the Power OFF mode automatically if the camera is not operated for a fixed period of time with the power on. Although this function could be set on or off for photo and playback modes, the power-saving mode could not be enabled while the camera was connected to a computer. However, this firmware update allows the power-saving mode to be set even while connected to a computer.

Q: What happens if Battery Pack BP-511/BP-512 is over-discharged? Please explain the details of this battery condition.

A:

If the voltage of BP-511/512 drops rapidly to a certain level, the protection circuit automatically stops the terminal output voltage to prevent any further drop in voltage. This is the "over-discharged" condition.

It happens if you store a BP-511/512 in the camera or leave it without use for a long period of time even if it is not stored in the camera.

Q: Explain the improvements of the charging function in detail.

A: With Firmware Version 1.0.0.0, BP-511 or BP-512 Battery Packs that had become over-discharged were sometimes not chargeable in the camera. With Version 1.1.0.0, such Battery Packs can be charged in the camera.

Q: As recommended in the Camera User Guide, I usually remove the Battery Packs BP-511/512 from the camera when I do not use them. Do I need to update the firmware to Version 1.1.0.0?

A: Yes.

We recommend you to update the firmware to Version 1.1.0.0, because Battery Packs BP-511/512 may be over-discharged sometimes even if they are not stored in the camera and left for a long time without being used.

Q: Can I charge over-discharged Battery Packs BP-511/512 with Charge Adapter/Car Battery Cable Kit CR-560 (Optional accessory)?

A: Yes.

Q: I could not charge the Battery Packs BP-511/512 in the camera with either Firmware Update Version 1.1.0.0 or with Charge Adapter/Car Battery Cable Kit CR-560 (Optional accessory)

A: Your Battery Packs BP-511/512 may be defective or their life has ended.
