EOS-1D Firmware Update 1.4.0 and New Driver Software

Canon has improved the EOS-1D's firmware and driver software for better performance and greater functionality. We urge EOS-1D owners to install Firmware Update 1.4.0 together with the latest versions of the EOS-1D driver software in order to utilize the following new features:
  1. Noise reduction tone curve settings are added to the EOS-1D's monitor menu.
  2. Continuous shooting is supported with Remote Capture 2.5 or higher.
  3. Exif 2.2 (Exif Print) is supported.
  4. Windows® XP is supported. (Direct connect support via WIA 4.5)
  5. Camera settings metadata has been modified.

NOTICE :

You must use the latest driver software according to your OS if you wish to take full advantage of Firmware Update 1.4.0. The new firmware is not compatible with older versions of the driver software, therefore please use the latest versions of both. If you use Firmware Update 1.4.0 with an older version of the driver software, the camera won't work properly and you will not be able to access your images.

Also, EOS-1D users cannot use the Windows driver software (WIA Driver Ver.4.5/TWAIN Driver Ver.4.5), which supports Firmware Version 1.4.0, unless the computer is equipped with an IEEE1394 connection. If your Windows computer is not equipped with an IEEE1394 connection, please do not update your EOS-1D with Firmware 1.4.0 and your computer with Windows driver software (WIA Driver Ver.4.5/TWAIN Driver Ver.4.5).

Q & A

Q : What features are updated?

A : Canon has improved the EOS-1D's firmware and driver software for better performance and greater functionality. When you download and install the latest versions of both, you can enjoy better digital photography by utilizing the following new features.
1. Noise reduction tone curve setting is added to the EOS-1D's monitor menu.
Noise reduction for horizontal banding which may be visible at high ISO speed settings is added to the EOS-1D's monitor menu. With this setting, you do not need to use the driver software to load a tone curve for noise reduction (as required with firmware version 1.3.0 or lower) and you do not need to apply exposure compensation or flash exposure compensation before shooting. Refer to the Noise Reduction Instruction Manual for more details about these settings. You can download a PDF version of Firmware Up date Instruction Manual and Noise Reduction Instruction Manual at the bottom of this web page.
2. Continuous shooting is supported with Remote Capture 2.5 or higher.
Only single frame shooting was possible with earlier versions of Remote Capture, but continuous shooting with the EOS-1D is now supported with Remote Capture 2.5 or higher, provided that the EOS-1D firmware is updated to Version 1.4.0 or higher. (Only single frame shooting is supported in Mac OS X even with Remote Capture 2.5.)
3. Exif 2.2 (Exif Print) is supported.
Exif 2.2 (Exif Print) is supported. Exif print enables more faithful color reproduction in printed output with compatible printers.
4. Windows XP is supported. (Direct connect support via WIA 4.5)
Install the WIA driver software, and Windows XP will be supported.
5. Camera settings metadata has been modified.
Wrong descriptions of shutter speed and aperture settings are modified in the image file's metadata. If your TWAIN driver software is version 4.5.0 or lower, download the latest version 4.5.3 (Described as "4.5") using the links provided on this web page for your regional Canon sales company.

Q : Why can't EOS-1D users update the camera’s firmware to Version 1.4.0 or the Windows driver software to Version 4.5 if the computer is not equipped with an IEEE1394 connection?

A : In order to use the EOS-1D version of the Windows driver software (WIA Driver Ver.4.5/TWAIN Driver Ver.4.5), camera and computer must be connected with the supplied interface cable the first time the driver software is launched in order to complete the installation. Moreover, for Windows users, only the latest driver software (WIA Driver Ver.4.5/TWAIN Driver Ver.4.5) can support images which are taken with the EOS-1D after it is updated to Firmware Version 1.4.0.

Q : How can I confirm which firmware version is installed in my EOS-1D?

A : Press the [MENU] button to display the menu. Hold down [MENU] and turn Quick Control Dial to select [Set-up menu]. The version number will be displayed by selecting Firmware Version from the menu.

Q : How do I update the EOS-1D firmware?

A : The methods of firmware updating are provided as below :
  • Download the firmware file from this Web site and conduct the updating as shown in the updating procedure.
  • Bring the camera to a Canon Service Center and have the firmware updated by the center.

If you choose the latter method, contact a Canon Service Center listed on the back of the Camera User's Guide enclosed with the camera.

Q : Do I need any special equipment to update the EOS 1D firmware?

A : The following equipment is necessary to update the EOS-1D firmware :

1. Ni-MH pack NP-E3 (The battery pack must be fully charged.)
2. DC Coupler kit DCK-E1
3. CF card (Above 8MB)

In order to supply power to the camera, 1 or 2 is necessary.

Q : I do not have the equipment necessary for updating the firmware.

A : Please contact a Canon Service Center listed on the back of the Camera User's Guide enclosed with the camera.

Q : How can I download the EOS-1D firmware?

A : The file for updating the firmware can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

Select the compressed self-extracting file appropriate for your OS and double-click to extract.

After completing the download and extraction, confirm that the following files have been generated :

Firmware update file

1D000140.BIN

* Windows, Properties size: (4,193,453 byte)
* Mac OS, Get Info, -> General information Size (4,193,453 byte)

If the file size differs from the above, please download the file again from the Web site. Also, firmware updating service is provided free of charge at Canon Service Centers.

Q : How do I update the firmware?

A : It can be updated by copying the downloaded file to an initialized (formatted) CF card, larger than 8MB and then loading the card in the camera. Please refer to the PDF file at the end of this page for more details.

Please note the following when updating:

  • Do not turn off the main switch of the camera during the firmware updating process. When using household AC power supply, be careful of power failure.

  • Also, do not open the CF card slot cover or press any button, dial, or switch. If the camera's power supply is interrupted during during firmware updating, the firmware may not load properly and the camera may require repairs before it can be used again.
