EOS D30 Firmware Update and Windows® XP Support


What's new?

New EOS D30 Firmware Version 1.0.3.0 increases the reliability of USB communication when the EOS D30 and a compatible PC or Macintosh computer are connected with the USB interface. The most noticeable improvement occurs during Interval Timer Shooting and Timer Shooting using Remote Capture. EOS D30 users may download the new firmware on this web page after agreeing to the terms listed below.

EOS D30 owners who use Windows XP or Windows Me are also encouraged to download the new D30 USB WIA Driver 4.2.
This driver software can be downloaded from the Canon web site in your market as follows:

The firmware of EOS D30 can be updated if its serial number starts with xxx200001 and ends with xxx899999. A small paper sheet confirming the update of Version 1.0.3.0 is inserted in the display box to identify modified cameras.

Firmware Q & A

Q: What problem is solved with this updated Version 1.0.3.0?
A: It increases the reliability of USB communication when the EOS D30 and a personal computer (PC) are connected. The most noticeable improvement occurs during Interval Timer Shooting and Timer Shooting using Remote Capture.

Q: Are the revision of the previous versions included in Version 1.0.3.0?
A: They are included. The following two problems are solved with Version 1.0.3.0.

1) Revision of Version 1.0.1.0

After turning on the main switch of the camera, if the camera is operated as follows, the camera locks up leaving the battery check icon displayed on the LCD panel:
The MENU button is pressed; then the INFO button is also pressed; and the main switch is turned off.

2) Revision of Version 1.0.2.0

The new firmware version solves an LCD monitor display problem that occasionally occurs:
1. Rotating the image on the LCD monitor;
2. Using the Image Protect function;
3. Tagging the image with DPOF instructions. Under these conditions, a "?" symbol may appear in the LCD monitor instead of the normal image display.

Q: Is the "Auto power-off problem" solved with this update?
A: The problem is not solved with this update. In order to solve the "Auto power-off problem", special procedures at a Canon Service Center are necessary. Please contact a Canon Service Center listed on the back of the Camera User's Guide enclosed with the camera.

Q: How do I update the EOS D30's firmware?
A: Two methods of firmware updating are provided.
  1. Download a firmware file from this web site and conduct the updating as shown in the updating procedure.
  2. Bring in the camera to a Canon Service Center and have the firmware updated by the center.
If you choose the latter method, contact a Canon Service Center listed on the back of the Camera User's Guide enclosed with the camera.

Q: Do I need any special equipment to update the EOS D30's firmware?
A: The following equipment is necessary to update the EOS D30's firmware.
  1. Battery Pack BP-511 (The battery pack must be fully charged.)
  2. Compact Power Adapter CA-PS400 and DC Coupler DR-400
  3. CF card FC-16M
  4. Interface Cable IFC-200 PCU (to verify the version number of the firmware)

In order to supply power to the camera, 1 or 2 is necessary. (AC power is recommended.

Q: How do I copy the downloaded firmware file to the CF card?
A: Two methods of copying the downloaded firmware file are provided.
  1. If you have a CF card reader or a PC card reader*, or a notebook type personal computer with a PC card slot*, please copy the firmware file included in the downloaded data a freshly formatted CF card.
    * If you use a CF card with a PC card reader or a PC card slot, a PC card adapter is necessary.
  2. If you do not have any of the above equipment, please connect the camera and a personal computer with a USB cable*, and copy the firmware file onto the CF card in the camera. For copying, "UploadFirmware**" (utility software) is included in the downloaded data.
    * For USB connection, the interface cable IFC-200PCU enclosed with the camera is necessary.
    ** Macintosh version of UploadFirmware require Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2.

Q: I do not have the equipment necessary for the firmware update.
A: Please contact a Canon Service Center listed on the back of the Camera User's Guide enclosed with the camera.

Q: While copying the firmware, the word "ERROR" is shown on the display.
A: The firmware updating procedure has failed. If you used battery pack BP-511, please change the power supply equipment to the compact power adapter CA-PS400 and the DC coupler DR-400, and try to update the firmware again. If the word "ERROR" still appears on the display after the update, or some problems are found during the update, please contact the Canon Service Center.

Q: How can I verify the version number of the firmware?
A: You will need to connect your D30 to the personal computer with an interface cable IFC-200PCU. After that, please verify the version number using any of the software programs listed below. For details, please refer to the Software Starter Guide.

The version number of the firmware is verified with the Software programs below provided with the camera.

  • Zoom Browser EX 2.4 or higher (for Windows® 95/98/Me/XP/2000, Windows NT® 4.0)
  • Image Browser 1.4 or higher (for Mac OS 8.1 or higher)
  • A TWAIN-compliant application program such as Adobe® Photoshop® LE, etc. (The program needs to be compliant to the Canon Digital Camera TWAIN driver version 3.4 or higher for Windows® 95/98/Me/XP/2000, Windows NT® 4.0.)
  • A plug-in compliant application program such as Adobe® Photoshop® LE. (The program needs to be compliant to the Canon Digital Camera Photoshop plug-in module version 3.4 or higher for Mac OS 8.1 or higher.)



Identifying EOS D30 cameras that need the firmware update

A camera having the following Body Number on the bottom needs the firmware update: xxx200001 to xxx899999 (ex. 0A1200001)

Even if a camera has the above Body Number, when a note which shows that the problem has already been compensated is enclosed with the camera, the firmware update is not necessary.

Equipment required for firmware update

  1. Battery Pack BP-511 ( fully charged )
  2. Compact Power Adapter CA-PS400 and DC Coupler DR-400
  3. CF card FC-16M
  4. Interface Cable IFC-200PCU ( to confirm the installed firmware version )

Use either Battery Pack BP-511 or Compact Power Adapter CA-PS400 as power supply. (AC power is recommended.)

Preparation for EOS D30 firmware update

STEP 1: Format a CF card

Use a formatted CF card for installing the new firmware ( FC-16M is recommended ).

Be sure to carefully review the contents of the CF card before formatting. Insert the CF card into the EOS D30, and switch the Main Switch to Replay mode. Press "MENU" button and select the tools "Setup" menu. And then select "FORMAT" and then accept the confirmation to initialize the CF card.

STEP 2: Prepare Power Supply and/or Interface Cable

One of the following power supplies is necessary for firmware update.

  • Battery Pack BP-511 ( fully charged )
  • Or, Compact Power Adapter CA-PS400 and DC Coupler DR-400

Interface Cable IFC-200PCU is necessary if you prefer to connecting the camera to the PC and copying the firmware file to the CF card.


STEP 3: Download the EOS D30 firmware update procedure file (PDF file)

Please download the PDF file and read the procedure carefully before firmware update.


STEP 4: Download the firmware from this page

Download the firmware update file that is suited to your computer's operating system.

The file is a self-extracting compressed archive. Double-click it for extraction.

After downloading and decompressing the file, verify that the folder contains the following files.

Windows®
"EOSD30Firmware1030E" folder

MacOS
"EOS D30 Firmware 1.0.3.0E" folder

* Windows® users may need to adjust their folder view setting to "see hidden files" in order to see all the files.

Please check the file size of the firmware before installation.

If the downloaded file size is different from the above, please download the firmware again.

Precautions

  • Use a fully charged Battery Pack BP-511 or dedicated Compact Power Adapter CA-PS400 for firmware update. (AC Power is recommended.)
  • Do not shut off the power during the firmware writing operation. A power failure during the firmware writing operation may disable the camera.
  • Do not open the CF card slot cover or press any camera buttons during the firmware writing operation.



EOS D30 firmware update procedures

(1) Copy the "D30V1030.fir" file to the formatted CF card.

If you do not have any of the card reading devices,

  1. Insert the CF card into the EOS D30, and connect it to the PC with Interface Cable IFC-200PCU.
  2. Double-click the "UploadFirmware*" in the decompressed folder, and follow the instructions so that the "D30V1030.fir" file can be copied onto the CF card in the EOS D30.

When you attempt to transfer the data to the CF card in the EOS D30 with the "UploadFirmware*" program, do not open the CF card slot cover, turn the Main Switch or turn the power off until the data transfer is completed. Any of the above operations during data transfer will disable the firmware update.

* Macintosh version of UploadFirmware requires Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2.

(2) Insert the CF card with the firmware into the camera and turn the Main Switch on.

The following message will appear on the LCD after the firmware update program activates.

When using the "UploadFirmware" utility, please be sure that data transfer is completed. Next step, open and close the CF card slot cover. Then, the firmware update program starts and the following message will appear on the LCD.

(3) Select [OK] with Quick Control dial of the camera and press the "SET" button.

If you select [Cancel] and press the "SET" button, the firmware update is cancelled.
If the message of "Execute Upgrade" does not appear, please return to Procedure (1) as the firmware is not copied correctly.

The first step in installing the new firmware is checking the currently installed firmware.

A message of [Checking Firmware] appears and the firmware currently installed is being checked. This step will take approximately 6 seconds.
An indicator (%) and a progress bar will appear during this step.
Do not press the shutter button during this step. Checking firmware will be cancelled by pressing the shutter button.

After checking the current firmware, both the current and the replaced versions will be displayed on the LCD as follows.

(4) Execute the firmware update after confirming the version to be installed, by selecting [OK] with Quick Control dial and pressing the "SET" button.

If you select [Cancel] and press the "SET" button, the firmware update is cancelled.

The following message will appear during firmware updating.

The update will take approximately 2 minutes.

Do not turn the power off during the firmware writing operation.
Do not open the CF card slot cover or press any camera button during the firmware writing operation.

When the update is completed, the following message will appear on the LCD.

(5) Complete the firmware update by pressing the "SET" button.

The firmware update is now completed. Format the CF card before using it again.

Verifying the firmware update

Please connect your EOS D30 to a compatible PC in which at least one of the following programs has been properly installed. You can verify the installed software version with the program. Please refer to the EOS D30 Software Starter Guide for details.
  • Zoom Browser EX 2.4 or higher ( for Windows® 95/98/Me/XP/2000, Windows NT®4.0)
  • Image Browser 1.4 or higher ( Mac OS 8.1 or higher )
  • Canon Digital Camera TWAIN Driver version 3.4 or higher, together with a TWAIN-compliant image editor such as Adobe® Photoshop® LE ( supplied with the EOS D30)
  • Canon Digital Camera Photoshop Plug-In Module version 3.4 or higher ( for Mac OS 8.1 or higher ) , together with a compatible image editor such as Adobe® Photoshop® LE (supplied with the EOS D30)



If an ERROR message appears during the firmware update

In case the following message appears during the firmware update, please press the "SET" button and return to the beginning of the procedure. If you still have a problem, please contact the Canon Service Center in your region.

You shall not assign, sublicense, sell, rent, lease, loan, convey or otherwise transfer to any third party, or copy, duplicate, translate or convert to another programming language the Software, except as expressly provided herein. You shall not alter, modify, disassemble, decompile or otherwise reverse engineer the Software and you also shall not have any third party to do so. You shall not modify, remove or delete a copyright notice of Canon contained in the Software.

Except as expressly provided herein, no license or right, express or implied, is hereby conveyed or granted by Canon to you for any intellectual property of Canon.

2. OWNERSHIP AND COPYRIGHT: The Software is copyrighted and owned by Canon. You agree and acknowledge that Canon transfers neither ownership interest nor intellectual property in the Software to you under this Agreement or otherwise, and that Canon retains all right, title and interest to the Software.

3. EXPORT RESTRICTIONS: You agree to comply with all applicable export control laws and regulations of the country involved, and not to export or re-export, directly or indirectly, the Software in violation of any such laws and regulations.

4. SUPPORT AND UPDATE: Canon, Canon’s subsidiaries and affiliates, their distributors and dealers are not responsible for maintaining or helping you in your use of the Software. No updates, bug-fixes or support will be made available to you for the Software.

5. DISCLAIMER: THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS NOTICE: The Software is a "commercial item," as that term is defined at 48 C.F.R. 2.101 (Oct 1995), consisting of "commercial computer software" and "commercial computer software documentation," as such terms are used in 48 C.F.R. 12.212 (Sept 1995). Consistent with 48 C.F.R. 12.212 and 48 C.F.R. 227.7202-1 through 227.72024 (June 1995), all U.S. Government End Users shall acquire the Software with only those rights set forth herein. 8. SEVERABILITY: In the event that any provision of this Agreement is declared or found to be illegal by any court or tribunal of competent jurisdiction, such provision shall be null and void with respect to the jurisdiction of that court or tribunal and all the remaining provisions of this Agreement shall remain in full force and effect.

9. ACKNOWLEDGMENT: BY CLICKING "I agree and download" AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE, YOU SHALL BE DEEMED TO HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT YOU HAVE READ THIS AGREEMENT, UNDERSTOOD IT, AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY ITS TERMS AND CONDITIONS.
